How to use the rich text editor with a keyboard only

In this article, we will explain how you can use the rich text editor with a keyboard only.

For the rich text editor (for example on the Start page of Exams) we use a third-party plugin called TinyMCE:

The TinyMCE editor is fully accessible, and you can control the editor with keyboard only. Here is a list of the available shortcuts. You can always find these in the help modal when you press Alt+0 in the editor.

In the editor body

Windows

  • Bold: Ctrl+B

  • Italic: Ctrl+I

  • Underline: Ctrl+U

  • Select all: Ctrl+A

  • Redo: Ctrl+Y / Ctrl+Shift+Z

  • Undo: Ctrl+Z

  • Header 1: Alt+Shift+1

  • Header 2: Alt+Shift+2

  • Header 3: Alt+Shift+3

  • Header 4: Alt+Shift+4

  • Header 5: Alt+Shift+5

  • Header 6: Alt+Shift+6

  • Paragraph: Alt+Shift+7

  • Focus to menubar: Alt+F9

  • Focus to toolbar: Alt+F10

  • Insert link: Ctrl+K

  • Toggle fullscreen: Ctrl+Shift+F

  • Open help modal: Alt+0

Mac

  • Bold: Command+B

  • Execute command: Enter / Space

  • Focus next widget: Right arrow / Tab / Down arrow

  • Focus previous widget: Left arrow / Shift+Tab / Up arrow

  • Open widget menu: Down arrow

  • Open submenu: Right arrow

  • Close submenu: Left arrow

  • Close dialog: Esc

  • Close menu: Esc

  • Move focus back to editor body: Esc
