Controlling the number of attempts per participant

🦉 Determine a maximum number of attempts per exam or course

Enabling access restrictions can limit attempts for courses and exams.

For this feature to function properly, you must either request an email address from the Participant Data tab or choose A predefined group of participants on the Access tab. Failure to do so will result in the system's inability to limit the number of attempts. This requirement applies to all formats. Follow these instructions to set it up.

Exam

To find this setting, go to Exams > Select Exam > Access > Maximum attempts per participant.

Extra attempts

If you share your exam using the invite-only option, you can grant extra attempts to your participants. To do so, please navigate to the Results section of your exam. Here, you will see the results of all participants. Click on the More Options button and select Add extra attempts. You will then see a pop-up.

Select the number of extra attempts and hit the Save button. Be aware that these extra attempts are cumulative.

Example:

  • Five attempts > Add extra attempts: 1 > Six attempts total

  • Five attempts > Add extra attempts: 3> Eight attempts total

Granting extra attempts only works if you asked for both name and email address or chose A predefined group of participants on the Access tab. If you have enabled a total time limit for all attempts, granting extra attempts does not reset this timer. Considering the example above, if the participant has exceeded the total time limit for all five attempts, the exam will not be accessible even if you add extra attempts. You will either need to increase this time limit or remove it completely and only set a time limit per attempt, not for all attempts.

Unfortunately, granting extra attempts is not possible yet when participants take the exam via the academy. As a workaround, you can delete a specific exam session of a participant. This will free up another attempt.

Course

To find this setting, go to Courses > Select Course > Settings > Advanced.

Enter a number in the data field and hit the Save button at the bottom of the page. If you prefer not to have a specific number of attempts for your participants, you can leave this field empty.
